How to play Tic Tac Toe
Two players take turns placing X and O on a 3×3 grid. The first to get three of their marks in a row — across, down or diagonally — wins the round. If all nine squares fill up with no line, the round is a draw. The player who starts switches every round, so both sides get a fair shot.
Game modes
- Easy – the computer picks random squares. Good for kids and warm-ups.
- Medium – usually plays the right move but slips up now and then.
- Impossible – a perfect player. You can force a draw, but you cannot win.
- 2 Players – pass the phone or share the keyboard with a friend.
Strategy that works
Start in a corner. If your opponent does not answer in the centre, you can usually set up a fork — two lines that each need one more mark — and they can only block one. When you play second, take the centre whenever the first move is a corner. Liked this? Try Chess, Rock Paper Scissors, Memory Match or Snake.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play Tic Tac Toe against the computer?
Yes. Choose Easy, Medium or Impossible. Easy makes random moves, Medium mixes smart and random moves, and Impossible plays perfectly, so the best you can do is a draw.
Can two people play on one device?
Yes. Pick 2 Players and take turns tapping the board. X always moves first in each new round, then the starting player alternates.
Is it possible to beat the Impossible level?
No. Tic Tac Toe is a solved game, and the Impossible computer always plays the best move. If you also play perfectly the game ends in a draw.
What is the best first move in Tic Tac Toe?
Taking a corner gives your opponent the most chances to make a mistake. The centre is the safest first move.
Does the game keep score?
Yes. Wins, losses and draws are counted for the current session. Press Reset score to start over.
Is Tic Tac Toe the same as noughts and crosses?
Yes. Noughts and crosses is the British name for the same game, also known as X and O.
