Typing Speed Test (WPM)
Type the words as they appear. Get your words per minute and accuracy the moment the timer runs out.
How the typing test works
Choose a length, click the box and start typing the highlighted word. Press Space to move to the next word. The timer starts with your first key and stops on its own. Correct words turn green, wrong words turn red, and your score is shown the moment time runs out.
Your speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where every five correctly typed characters count as one word. Accuracy shows how many of your key presses were right. Your best WPM for each test length is saved on this device.
Typing speed by level
- Under 30 WPM – beginner, often looking at the keyboard.
- 30–45 WPM – average for most adults.
- 45–70 WPM – above average, good for office and study work.
- 70–100 WPM – fast, typical of programmers and professional typists.
- 100+ WPM – competitive typing speed.
Tips to improve
Keep your index fingers on F and J, look at the screen rather than your hands, and slow down until you reach 95% accuracy before pushing speed. A few short sessions each day beat one long one. For more practice tools try the word counter, the keyboard tester or the CPS test.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types around 40 words per minute. 50–60 WPM is above average, 70+ WPM is fast and most professional typists sit between 80 and 100 WPM.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM counts every 5 correctly typed characters (including spaces) as one word, then divides by the test time in minutes. Mistyped words do not count toward your speed.
How is accuracy measured?
Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly out of all the characters you typed, including the ones you later fixed.
Can I take the typing test on my phone?
Yes. Tap the text box to open your keyboard. Phone scores are usually lower than keyboard scores, so compare them separately.
Which test length should I choose?
The 60-second test is the most common benchmark. Use 15 or 30 seconds for quick practice and 120 seconds to check your stamina.
How can I type faster?
Learn touch typing so you do not look at the keys, keep your fingers on the home row, focus on accuracy first and practise for a few minutes every day.
